The Dark side

The Force has two aspects, one light and one dark. The dark side lurks in the shadows, whispering to Force-users, tempting them which quick and easy access to power. While seemingly stronger, the dark side is only easier. It consists of the destructive impulses of all living beings. Anger, fear, hatred and aggression are expressions of the dark side, and such emotions can quickly lead a Force-user down the dark side's corrupting path. Early on in training, a Force-user finds that the dark side greatly enhances abilities. After time, the dark side fails to respond as quickly, and it demands more and more of those in its embrace.

Turning to the Dark side

This is always a tough call in simming because the person, unless he or she planned it, is not going to want to turn to the dark side no matter what has happened or what he or she has done. This is where responsibility plays in. If a person continues to not play out a Jedi character fully than he or she is not fit to be one.

"You underestimate the power of the dark side."

-Darth Vader

Witnessing acts of evil
A Jedi cannot purposely stand idle while watching evil being committed and not act accordingly. A Jedi who willingly allows acts of violence, cruelty and immorality to be performed is encouraging the forces of darkness and is heavily prone to turn to the dark side.

Committing acts of evil

A Jedi acts from wisdom by using reason and persuasion instead of force or compulsion. The Jedi's skills in the Force should only be used for knowledge and defense. A Jedi who uses Force abilities for power, wealth or convenience when other means could be used to complete the objective are inclined to be seduced to the dark side.

"But how am I to know the good side from the bad?"
"You will know. When you are calm, at peace. Passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack."
-Luke and Master Yoda

Association
A Jedi should not ally, mingle, or associate with those who choose to place suffering on others. When a Jedi runs into an individual or a group of individuals that commit evil, the Jedi must do anything possible to fend off and stop whatever evil they may be making. Violence should not be the first choice though. Distraction, mind tricks and reasoning should be the first choice. If a Jedi fails to protect the innocent in this way, the dark side will surely be the outcome in the end.

Succumbing
A Jedi can be turned to the dark side by a dark influenced character or may even choose to partake in it's evil by his or her own choice.

"You're gravely mistaken. You won't convert me as you did my father."
-Luke

A Jedi who is...

Consumed by the dark side: Was witness to many acts of evil purposely standing idle while watching it being committed. He or she has become engulfed in the pity and guilt from not acting. It is said that many go insane after they have been consumed and suffer greatly with their sorrow.

"I can't do it Ben. I can't kill my own father."
-Luke

Seduced by the dark side: Did not use the power of the Force for wisdom or peace but instead was corrupted by the thirst for power and wealth. The Jedi who walks down this path becomes aggressive, easier to anger, and enjoys intimidating the weak.

"Luke, don't give in to hate -- that leads to the dark side."
-Obi-Wan

Embraced by the dark side: Chose the darkness from the light by his or her own choice or by the persuasion of others. This Jedi becomes more sneaky, deceptive and overconfident who takes great pleasure in the suffering of others at his or her mercy.

"Your overconfidence is your weakness."
-Luke

Returning to the Light side

"Dark side characters can return to the light, but it's not easy - the dark side is never eager to release those it has enslaved. Such a character must truly begin to believe in the light, forsaking the path of darkness. The influence of others, particularly Jedi of the light, may cause a dark side character to have a "moment of doubt".

A dark side character must prove his or her commitment to the light by partaking in a selfless manner at a dramatically appropriate time. Often, this requires the character to make a heroic sacrifice, such as risking certain death in defense of the innocent and good."

"You already have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister...you were right."

-Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader)

The Three Force Skills

Control

"Control is the Jedi's ability to control his or her body. A Jedi with control can access his or her own internal well of Force Energy, learning harmony with and mastery over the functions of his or her own body."

Sense

"Sense teaches a Jedi to sense the Force in other things beyond his or her own body. The Jedi learns to feel the bonds that connect all living things and gains the ability to understand how all things are interconnected. Sense governs powers such as detecting danger and learning information about the world around the Jedi."

"Feel, don't think. Use your emotions."
-Master Qui-Gon

Alter

"A Jedi with alter learns how to change the distribution and nature of the Force. Jedi who have mastered alter can move physical objects with their minds, can help others control their own Force, or can manipulate the Force in the bodies of others. This power can be used to change the perceptions of others and make them come to incorrect conclusions."

Choose your Ally

The Force is a powerful ally, choose your strength well. Every Jedi has a natural strength in one of the three Force skills: Control, Alter and Sense. Choosing to harness that strength or move to build upon a different skill will be one of the most important decisions a Jedi will ever make. When a Jedi chooses which skill he will devote most of his energy to he must then choose the next ability to devote time to. The remaining skill will fall short. Thus is the way of life. No Jedi Master can perfectly master all of the abilities or be naturally gifted to all three of the Force skills.
A simple equation must be in mind. For instance, a Jedi character chooses Control as her main ability that she will devote most of her life studying and perfecting, and then chooses Sense as her next in line where she will practice but will never master fully. The last skill of Alter will be her weakest ability. Recapping: Control is her Natural Strength, her strongest skill. Sense is her second choice, she is neutral in her abilities in this category. Alter is her weakest, she is not very strong in this skill.
Depending on which order a Jedi character chooses to study the Force skills will greatly effect the outcome and experience of his or her career as a Jedi. The best order a Jedi can take is Sense, Control and Alter. Or Control, Sense and Alter. No Jedi unless tainted by the Dark Side or unless Sith will want to choose Alter as his or her main focus. This is because the Alter derived abilities have all but one ability a true focused Jedi would use. Take time now to look at the Force abilities list on the Force abilities page by clicking here Force Abilities They are in categories in which they belong.
Force abilities such as Affect Mind demand an understanding of all of the Force skills. Understand that your Jedi character, depending on what order you chose your Force skills, will be strong in some areas and weak in others.

"The time has come for you to make your choice. May the Force aid you in your decision."

-Master Odan-Urr

Beware of your weakness

A Jedi's weakest ability, no matter in what skill, will pain him in some way. Be mindful of that weakness at all times or it could very well be your downfall.
There is no secret to this formula of Force skills, no magic conclusion. This system is not based on charts, dice or percentages; it is how strong a character is compaired to someone else. If a Dark Jedi Master was strong in Alter and a Jedi Master was weak in Control, then the Dark Jedi if using an Alter power like Telekinetic Kill will be much stronger and the Jedi Master would not be able to block with Force of Will very well. This is because the Jedi Master would be weak in the counter abilities in the Control area such as Force of Will opposed to the Dark Jedi Master who is strong in the Alter abilities such as Telekinetic Kill. It is important to know what your offender's strong, neutral and weak skills are OOC so you can better understand the process when in a combat situation.

Recap:

A Jedi Master and a Dark Jedi Master are in a combat situation. The Jedi Master is weak in Control and the Dark Jedi Master is strong in Alter. (We will ignore the neutral abilties of the two because it is unimportant in this example.) The Dark Jedi Master uses Telekinetic Kill and it is against the Jedi. The Jedi uses Force of Will to protect himself. Since the Jedi is weak in Control, his Force of Will opposed to the Dark Jedi Master's strong ability in Alter does not shield him from the abilty all together. He would feel his throat slowly cave in and unless he would act quickly, his slight grasp of Force of Will would fail all together and he would choke.
